"Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it."  - Jesus

Disciple-Maker Voices, Book 1

“Book 1 opened my eyes to the true state of the American Church. In a culture driven by consumerism, many who call themselves ‘Christians’ are more concerned with their own comfort than with the gospel of Jesus Christ. They pursue knowledge about Jesus rather than a radical submission to His commands. Book 1 makes it clear: to obey the call of Acts 1:8 and Matthew 28:19 20, we must fully surrender ourselves and align our hearts with the will of the Father in obedience. The harvest is indeed plentiful, but the laborers are few. Or, as Book 1 more accurately puts it: church members are plentiful—but true disciples are few.”

Logan Taylor, Young Adult Pastor, Woodbine Baptist Church

 Start Your Journey Today.

Hear and Obey?

After more than 50 years in the church—and now serving as a discipleship pastor—I’ve come to recognize a deeply rooted and widespread issue facing the modern church. It’s a problem we can’t afford to ignore any longer. We must ask ourselves a hard but necessary question: Are we making disciple-makers or simply hoping for church members?

I am so very grateful that I was raised in biblically sound churches. The teaching was solid, the doctrine strong. But the focus was primarily on gaining knowledge, not living in obedience to Jesus. Sadly, not much has changed. Week after week, year after year, we continue to prioritize information over transformation. We’ve become well-versed in Scripture, but often slow to apply it. It’s time for a shift—from knowledge-based discipleship to obedience-based discipleship.

If you want to test my observations, try this simple test. Next Sunday, ask your church, Sunday school class, or small group to recite the Great Commission. Chances are, many will be able to quote it. Then ask this follow-up question: “Who are you discipling right now?” More often than not, the room falls silent. Try the same test in your next church staff meeting. You’ll likely hear the same response—silence.

The message is clear: We’ve mastered biblical knowledge but neglected biblical obedience.

This book is a call back to the Great Commission—not just knowing Jesus’ commands, but living them out and teaching others to do the same. I hope that through this book, you’ll be challenged, encouraged, and equipped to lead others in becoming true disciples who make disciples.

My name is Jeff Gray, and I have the privilege of serving as the pastor of Church 242—an amazing group of people who meet in our home. I also serve with Biglife, a dynamic organization committed to taking Jesus to the nations. For more than three decades, I’ve walked through life with my wife, Denise—my best friend and faithful partner in ministry.

Before settling into pastoral ministry in the U.S., our family spent 14 years on the international mission field. We served in three African countries and ministered across multiple nations in Asia. Those years taught us that discipleship is not a program or a curriculum, but a lifestyle—a journey of obedience and love for Christ that we are called to walk with others.

This book was born from that journey. It’s not a manual or a checklist, but a call to rediscover the heart of disciple-making. Whether you’re a pastor, small group leader, missionary, or simply a follower of Jesus who wants to grow and help others do the same, my prayer is that this material will encourage, challenge, and equip you.

Until there is no place left,

Jeff
